Variational Approach to Tomographic Reconstruction

چکیده
We formulate the tomographic reconstruction problem in a variational setting. The object to be reconstructed is considered as a continuous density function, unlike in the pixel-based approaches. The measurements are modeled as linear operators (Radon transform), integrating the density function along the ray path. The criterion that we minimize consists of a data term and a regularization term. The data term represents the inconsistency between applying the measurement model to the density function and the real measurements. The regularization term corresponds to the smoothness of the density function. We show that this leads to a solution lying in a finite dimensional vector space which can be expressed as a linear combination of generating functions. The coefficients of this linear combination are determined from a linear equation set, solvable either directly, or by using an iterative approach. Our experiments show that our new variational method gives results comparable to the classical filtered backprojection for high number of measurements (projection angles and sensor resolution). The new method performs better for medium number of measurements. Furthermore, the variational approach gives usable results even with very few measurements when the filtered back-projection fails. Our method reproduces amplitudes more faithfully and can cope with high noise levels; it can be adapted to various characteristics of the acquisition device.

A variational method using fractional order Hilbert spaces for tomographic reconstruction of blurred and noised binary images
We provide in this article a refined functional analysis of the Radon operator restricted to axisymmetric functions, and show that it enjoys strong regularity properties in fractional order Hilbert spaces. This study is motivated by a problem of tomographic reconstruction of binary axially symmetric objects, for which we have available one single blurred and noised snapshot. We propose a variat...
متن کاملGeneralized sampling: a variational approach .II. Applications
The variational reconstruction theory from a companion paper finds a solution consistent with some linear constraints and minimizing a quadratic plausibility criterion. It is suitable for treating vector and multidimensional signals. Here, we apply the theory to a generalized sampling system consisting of a multichannel filterbank followed by a nonuniform sampling. We provide ready-made formula...
متن کاملA moment-based variational approach to tomographic reconstruction
We describe a variational framework for the tomographic reconstruction of an image from the maximum likelihood (ML) estimates of its orthogonal moments. We show how these estimated moments and their (correlated) error statistics can be computed directly, and in a linear fashion from given noisy and possibly sparse projection data. Moreover, thanks to the consistency properties of the Radon tran...
متن کاملTowards a Variational Approach to Regularized Tomographic Reconstruction
The classical Kaczmarz’s method, which is the basis for many Algebraic Reconstruction Techniques (ART), is very popular in the field of image reconstruction. However, this algorithm gives only satisfactory results for consistent data. For inconsistent data, which is the case in practice, the algorithm has some problems with respect to convergence. In this master’s thesis, we formulated the reco...
متن کاملA New Approach for Quantitative Evaluation of Reconstruction Algorithms in SPECT
ABTRACT Background: In nuclear medicine, phantoms are mainly used to evaluate the overall performance of the imaging systems and practically there is no phantom exclusively designed for the evaluation of the software performance. In this study the Hoffman brain phantom was used for quantitative evaluation of reconstruction techniques. The phantom is modified to acquire t...
